"He is out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury," a BCCI source told PTI.

The three-match India vs Afghanistan ODI series is scheduled to begin on June 13 in Dharamsala. Kohli's absence comes shortly after an outstanding IPL 2026 campaign, where the Indian cricket team batter played a crucial role for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and hit the winning runs in the final against Gujarat Titans.

Meanwhile, there is still uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma's availability for the ODI series. According to the report, the Indian captain was included in the squad on the condition that he would participate only if he is fully fit. As of now, there is no official clarity regarding his fitness status.

Kohli Reflects on His Growth as a Batter

Before the injury update emerged, Virat Kohli spoke about the evolution of his batting approach, the changing demands of modern T20 cricket and the importance of adapting to different match situations.

The veteran batter, who played a key role in RCB's IPL 2026 title-winning campaign and once again finished among the leading run-scorers, said that continuous improvement has been one of the biggest reasons behind his longevity at the highest level.

"The fact that I continue to play and compete, I want to keep improving and find areas in my game where I can make a difference and help the team score. That's always been my focus,” Kohli said in a video shared by IPL.

Kohli's Message to Young Cricketers

Virat Kohli also shared valuable advice for young and aspiring cricketers, highlighting that success in modern cricket is not just about hitting big sixes. Instead, he stressed the importance of understanding game situations and developing multiple skills to contribute to the team.

According to Kohli, players must prepare themselves to adapt to different conditions and challenges during a match rather than relying on a single style of play.

“It's about understanding situations in the game. The preparation has to be such that you can play in 3-4 different ways. If the pitch gets tough, you should be able to hit boundaries and not just sixes. Even if that's not possible, you should be able to rotate, strike and stay in the game,” he said.

India Awaits Further Fitness Updates

With Virat Kohli officially ruled out of the Afghanistan ODI series and questions still surrounding Rohit Sharma's fitness, the Indian cricket team will be closely monitoring developments ahead of the series opener in Dharamsala.

Kohli's absence leaves a significant gap in India's batting line-up, especially after his exceptional form in IPL 2026. Fans and team management alike will now hope for a swift recovery as India prepares for the three-match ODI assignment against Afghanistan.
