Google Maps Boosts Privacy With Local Device Storage For Location History
Google Maps is introducing a new feature aimed at enhancing user privacy . According to recent reports, Google is modifying how it manages users' location data. Instead of storing location history on Google’s servers, this data will now be saved directly on users' devices. Additionally, the location history feature will be renamed to Timeline .
This feature is being gradually rolled out to users, with full implementation expected by December 1, 2024.
Google Maps’ Timeline Data
The primary goal of this update is to give users greater control over their location data. With location history stored locally on users' Android or iOS devices, users no longer need to rely on cloud servers. This includes data on places visited, such as restaurants.
To enhance data security , Google will offer end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for Timeline in Maps, ensuring that only the user can access this backup, providing an extra layer of protection.
This update is exclusive to the mobile app . The web version of the Timeline will be discontinued, meaning users will no longer be able to access their location history via the desktop version of Google Maps. However, the feature will continue to function on Google Maps for Android and iOS, and location data will not sync across different devices.
How to Save Your Timeline Data
As the feature is still being rolled out, some users may not have access to it yet. Google will notify users via email and push notifications when the feature becomes available.
Upon receiving the notification, users will be prompted to migrate their existing location history to their devices through an updated app. If users do not migrate their data, Google may delete some or all of their Timeline data as the web feature is phased out.
For users changing devices, Google Maps will offer a backup option to prevent data loss. Users will be able to save encrypted copies of their location history on Google’s servers, which can be restored when they switch to a new phone.
