Google Maps Launch 'Blackspots Alert' Feature to Enhance Road Safety
In a city where traffic rarely pauses and road safety remains a persistent challenge, Delhi recorded a staggering 5,657 road accidents in 2024, of which 1,504 proved fatal, according to data cited by The Times of India. Now, a new collaboration between the Delhi Traffic Police and Google Maps aims to address this crisis head-on.
A feature dubbed “Blackspots Alert” is set to be rolled out on Google Maps, warning drivers in real-time when they are approaching high-risk accident zones. These alerts will appear 100–200 metres before a vehicle nears any of the 117 identified black spots in the capital—areas notorious for collisions due to factors such as speeding, poor infrastructure, and unsafe pedestrian layouts.
Prominent among these accident-prone areas are Azadpur, Wazirabad, and Anand Vihar—busy traffic hubs that often experience chaos during peak hours.
“This initiative marks a critical turning point in Delhi’s road safety efforts,”— a senior official from the Delhi Traffic Police.
According to the official, the technology is akin to existing Google Maps features that inform users about traffic congestion or road construction. However, this tool shifts the focus from navigation convenience to life-saving interventions.
The alerts will resemble regular GPS prompts but will urge drivers to slow down and drive with caution instead of directing route changes.
