The Accelerometer Does Most of the Work

The most important sensor behind activity detection is the accelerometer.

For example, if your phone swings slightly while you walk, the accelerometer can detect the movement while the gyroscope can help understand how the device is rotating.

This combination can make activity recognition more reliable.

GPS Is Not Always Necessary

Many people assume that their phone needs GPS to know they are walking.


It does not.

GPS can determine your location and movement across a larger area, but motion sensors can recognise physical activity without knowing where you are.

That is why basic step counting can continue even when GPS is turned off.

For more sophisticated fitness features, smartphones and wearable devices may combine motion sensors with GPS, heart-rate information and other signals.
