Huge Samsung Galaxy shake-up teased and it could change Android phones for good
We're heading into the summer, and that means one thing on the yearly tech calendar. Samsung always reveals its latest foldable phones during these hotter months, and it seems 2026 will be no different. It's long been rumoured that the firm's next Unpacked event will take place in July, and now more fuel has been added to that fire with Samsung teasing what's to come.
In fact, ahead of its blockbuster event, Samsung has released a series of teaser videos across its social channels that offer clues about the company's next direction for foldables.
All of the mini movies, released overnight, feature a very different form factor, which could signal that Samsung is making some big changes this year. Instead of the usual tall and slim Z Fold devices, it appears that things could look a lot more like a passport with a smaller but wider design. "New shape. New Joy," one of the teasers says, along with images showing cut-down styling.
This makes a lot of sense, as once opened, this version of the Z Fold would feel much more like a tablet rather than the current square-screen owners are faced with.
"Since introducing the first Galaxy Fold, Samsung has expanded the category through different approaches to productivity, creativity and self-expression, guided by the belief that one size does not fit all," Samsung said in an email sent to Express.co.uk.
"From Galaxy Z Fold and Flip to ongoing exploration of new concepts and experiences, the company's focus has remained the same: opening more ways for people to interact with the world."
It could be that Samsung keeps its current lineup of Z Fold and Z Flip devices and then adds this new form factor to the range as well. This would certainly give consumers far more choice when choosing a bendy smartphone.
It may also mean the Korean firm beats one of its biggest rivals to the punch. Apple is also expected to release its first iPhone Fold later this year, with most expecting the US tech giant to opt for a passport-style design as well.
We will have to wait and see what comes next, but Samsung looks set to reveal all within weeks. Apple will almost certainly fight back with a big event likely to take place in September.
If you love smartphones, there could be an exciting few months ahead, so watch this space.
