Instagram Battery Drain Issues on Android: Update Now to Fix the Problem
Instagram continues to be one of the most popular apps on Android, with over a billion users globally using the platform to share photos, videos, and stay connected with others. However, in recent weeks, several Android users have reported a significant battery drain linked to the Instagram app—even when it wasn't actively running in the background.
While Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has remained silent on the issue, Google has acknowledged the problem and is advising users to update to the latest version of the app to resolve it.
In a support post released on May 28, Google stated that an updated version of Instagram is being rolled out to fix the battery drain affecting Android devices. The company recommends users head to the Google Play Store and install Instagram build 382.0.0.49.84 to prevent further battery issues.
Despite the update, neither Google nor Instagram has offered any explanation for what caused the sudden spike in power consumption. Reports from affected users suggest that the app was drawing power even while inactive. Some users who attempted to downgrade the app as a workaround experienced device overheating, while others temporarily switched to Instagram Lite, confirming that the battery drain originated from the standard Instagram app.
Google noted that the issue specifically affected Pixel devices that received the May 2024 update, although it is unclear whether smartphones from other Android manufacturers were also impacted.
The update comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Meta. Recently, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the tech giant of attempting to establish an illegal monopoly in the social media space by acquiring rival platforms Instagram and WhatsApp.
For now, Android users are advised to update their Instagram app to the latest version to prevent battery drain and potential device overheating.
