Meta Introduces Global Communities Feature on Messenger, Connect with Up To 5,000 Members Globally
Meta has recently unveiled 'Communities' on Messenger, a feature that was first introduced on WhatsApp in 2022. This addition aims to enhance communication for organizations , schools , and private groups globally. Unlike the Messenger app, Communities allow both current and future members to view posts. According to Meta, each community can accommodate up to 5,000 members, regardless of their affiliation with a specific Facebook group.
Unlike WhatsApp Communities, which require a phone number for invitations, Messenger Communities can be expanded by inviting Facebook friends and their connections. Meta did not make a formal announcement but confirmed the feature's existence to TechCrunch.
A blog post from Meta explains, “You can create a dedicated community on Messenger to connect with people sharing similar interests. These communities are managed by community admins and are accessible to anyone on Messenger. They differ from Facebook groups and do not include the same features. Communities on Messenger are meant for more public conversations and follow privacy guidelines akin to community chats linked with Facebook groups, rather than personal message privacy rules.”
