Meta's 'neglected' employees get 'hiring message' from Elon Musk's X product head Nikitia Bier
Elon Musk 's X has a proposal for Meta employees who are feeling "neglected". The social media platform's head of product, Nikita Bier, has publicly invited engineers at Facebook’s parent company to apply for jobs at X. He even cited Meta's recent efforts to improve employee morale as part of his recruitment pitch. In a post shared on microblogging site X, Bier targeted employees affected by ongoing changes at Meta and referenced the company's decision to improve workplace perks, including office snacks and drinks.
In his X post, Bier wrote, "Neglected Meta employees: X is hiring web and data engineers & scientists. We will match or even exceed any snack budget offer." He also encouraged applicants to include the word "snacks" in their job applications for software engineering roles at X. The comments come as Meta attempts to address internal dissatisfaction following layoffs, organisational restructuring and a broader push towards artificial intelligence (AI).
How Meta is trying to improve morale after layoffs and AI restructuring
According to reports, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth recently acknowledged employee concerns in an internal memo, admitting the company had done "an atrocious job explaining the vision" behind the creation of its Applied AI division.
The unit, formed earlier this year, brought together approximately 6,500 engineers and product managers to accelerate Meta's AI initiatives. Some employees reportedly described the transition as confusing and disruptive.
Bosworth said Meta had "undermined the trust" employees placed in leadership by failing to clearly communicate the company's plans and by rapidly restructuring teams.
To address those concerns, Meta has expanded budgets for employee travel, social events and office perks, including upgrades to workplace microkitchens and snack offerings. The company is also limiting managers to 20 direct reports and introducing AI coaching tools to support employee development.
“I hope we can rekindle the best of the culture we joined,” Bosworth wrote in the memo, according to reports. The company has also allowed employees reassigned to Applied AI teams to apply for other internal positions if they wish to move elsewhere within Meta.
Meta's morale challenges have been compounded by workforce reductions and new workplace monitoring initiatives. The company laid off approximately 8,000 employees in May as part of efforts to redirect resources towards AI development and infrastructure investments. The cuts followed several rounds of layoffs conducted since late 2022.
