Microsoft Issues Warning for Indian PC Users: Windows 10 Support Ends Soon - Here’s What You Can Do
The clock is ticking for Windows 10 users. Microsoft is officially ending support for the popular operating system this month, leaving millions of PC users in India facing a tough decision either pay for extended updates or switch to a new Windows 11 device altogether.
For many, the change feels sudden and inconvenient. Microsoft understands the transition could be drastic, especially for those who have been comfortably using Windows 10 for years. However, continuing to use the old OS without support will leave systems vulnerable to security risks and software bugs.
Limited Choices, Extra Cost
Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t offered many alternatives for users hoping to stick with Windows 10. Most options involve spending money whether it’s paying for the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program or investing in a new PC that supports Windows 11.
The ESU program gives users one extra year of official support, priced at around $30 (approximately ₹2,550). This plan covers the period from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026, as confirmed by Microsoft’s chief Yusuf Mehdi. “Once you select an option and follow the on-screen steps, your PC will automatically be enrolled. ESU coverage for personal devices runs from October 15, 2025, through October 13, 2026,” he wrote in a post explaining the update plan.
A Free Way to Extend Support
Interestingly, Microsoft has introduced a way to extend support without paying but it comes with a catch. Users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points or back up their data using the Windows Backup cloud app to qualify for a free ESU extension.
To earn those reward points, you need a Microsoft account and must perform specific activities such as using Bing to search the web, shopping in the Microsoft Store, playing Xbox games, and completing various other tasks. While it sounds simple, reaching 1,000 points will likely take significant effort, especially as the October 2025 deadline approaches.
Why It Matters for Indian Users
Windows 10 still powers the majority of PCs across India, largely because many users find upgrading to Windows 11 expensive particularly when it requires newer hardware. With that in mind, Microsoft’s paid ESU option offers a temporary lifeline, giving people time to plan their next move without rushing into an upgrade.
While the company’s free update route may seem tempting, it requires consistent activity and participation in Microsoft’s ecosystem. For most users, paying a nominal fee might be the easier and more reliable option.
As Windows 10 nears its end, Indian PC users must decide whether to pay, earn, or upgrade because after this month, staying on Windows 10 without support could mean staying unprotected.
