SIM Card Purchase Rules Are Changing from April 1—Here’s What You Need to Know
Cyber fraud is a growing concern worldwide, and India is stepping up its efforts to tackle the issue. With cybercrime cases on the rise, the government is tightening regulations on SIM card sales to prevent misuse and fraudulent activities.
Stricter Rules for SIM Card Sellers
To enhance security, all telecom operators must register individuals selling SIM cards. While this directive has been in place for some time, the government has extended the deadline for compliance until March 31, 2025. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a ban on selling SIM cards from April 1, 2025.
New Measures for SIM Card Issuance
The government is also addressing issues related to individuals holding multiple SIM cards. Under current regulations, an individual can own up to nine SIM cards. Authorities are now exploring stricter enforcement against those exceeding this limit.
Major Telecom Operators Already Compliant
Private telecom providers like Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel have completed the registration process for their agents, franchisees, and SIM card distributors. However, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is still in the process of compliance.
Additional Time for BSNL Dealers
To ensure a smooth transition, the government has granted BSNL a two-month extension for registering its SIM dealers. From April 1, 2025, only registered SIM distributors will be authorized to sell SIM cards, adding a layer of transparency and security to the process.
These measures aim to tighten control over SIM card distribution, reducing fraudulent activities and strengthening India’s digital security framework.
