WhatsApp, the world’s most popular instant messaging platform, is widely used for work communication as well as staying in touch with friends and family. While the app’s interface is simple and minimalistic, keeping track of conversations especially in busy groups can sometimes be overwhelming.

According to a recent report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently testing a new threaded replies feature to make conversations more organised. This update is designed to help users follow replies more easily, improving clarity and engagement within both group and one-to-one chats.

How the Threaded Replies Feature Works

The new system allows replies to create a separate thread under the original message. When users tap on a thread, they can view all related replies in one place. They can also add new responses, which will be labelled as a “follow-up reply” (though this label is not visible to everyone at the moment).

This makes it much simpler to dive into ongoing discussions without needing to scroll through long message histories or repeatedly quote earlier texts. However, only messages with the feature enabled will generate threads meaning not all chats will automatically be structured in this way.

Availability in WhatsApp Beta

Currently, the threaded replies feature is being tested in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Some beta testers are already seeing a redesigned reply system, showcasing how future updates may reshape the user experience.

Important Points to Note

Messages replied to before a thread is created will not appear within it, though WhatsApp plans to restructure conversations so they remain easy to follow.

The feature is limited to beta users for now, and it could take weeks or even months before it rolls out globally to all users.

Why This Matters

Threaded replies could be a game-changer for WhatsApp, particularly for users in large groups where messages often get lost in the flood of conversation. By making chats more structured and easy to read, WhatsApp is addressing one of the platform’s most common usability concerns.
