Modern phones also perform other tasks while charging, from syncing data to running background apps. The real question is not simply why your phone gets hot while charging, but how hot is too hot? Understanding what is happening inside the device can help you protect battery health and spot problems before they become serious.
The charger and charging circuitry can also become warm. This is particularly noticeable with fast charging, which delivers more power over a shorter period. Both Apple and Samsung acknowledge that phones can become warmer during charging, with built-in systems designed to regulate temperature when necessary.
Apple, for example, slows charging after around 80 per cent partly to reduce battery stress and heat. Samsung similarly notes that charging speed can automatically decrease when the phone or surrounding environment becomes hot.
This is why a phone may feel much hotter when you are gaming during charging than when it is simply sitting idle. Samsung specifically recommends stopping intensive use if the device becomes too warm.
Heat can also build up when a phone is charging in direct sunlight, inside a hot car or under a thick case. Apple recommends using iPhones between 0°C and 35°C, while Samsung gives the same 0°C to 35°C range as an optimal usage environment.
Wireless charging can also generate additional warmth, especially when the phone is poorly aligned or foreign objects are caught between the device and charging pad.
