Bengal BJP Govt Rolls Back OBC Quota Hike, Scraps 113 Groups Added Under TMC
The West Bengal Assembly has passed two major Bills that overhaul the state's OBC reservation framework. The BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has restored OBC reservation to 7% from 17% and removed 113 caste groups added during the previous TMC regime. The government says the move follows the Calcutta High Court's 2024 verdict and restores the authority of the Backward Classes Commission. The decision is expected to trigger a major political confrontation over reservation policy, social justice and allegations of vote-bank politics.
