Big Setback For Vijay Govt, Madras High Court Cancels Jobs Order For Karur Victims' Families

The Madras High Court has quashed the Tamil Nadu government's decision to grant government jobs to the families of those killed in the Karur stampede, while disposing of PILs challenging the appointments. The court noted that the stampede case is under CBI investigation and is being monitored by the Supreme Court, and therefore refrained from commenting on the merits. It observed that such appointments could set a precedent for similar demands in cases involving road accidents or industrial disasters. The Bench also highlighted that thousands of candidates are awaiting recruitment through the TNPSC and suggested that skill development and livelihood assistance would be a more sustainable form of rehabilitation. The Tamil Nadu government is likely to challenge the verdict before the Supreme Court.
