Explained: Why Amritpal Singh’s Party Fielded Son of Indira Gandhi’s Assassin In Punjab Elections?
Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), led by jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, has named Satwant Singh, son of Kehar Singh, as its first candidate for the Punjab Assembly elections. Satwant Singh, 61, will contest from Bassi Pathana in Fatehgarh Sahib district, party spokesperson Shamsher Singh Padhri said. Kehar Singh was executed for his role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Meanwhile, Amrit Kaur Maloya, daughter of assassin Beant Singh, has expressed her desire to contest from the same seat as an independent. The party’s parliamentary board also held a religious programme at Akal Takht and said candidate selection would prioritise the Panth, Punjab and public welfare.
