Indian Parl Panel Grills Meta Over PM Modi Video Takedown, Seeks Mark Zuckerberg's Apology

Meta apologised before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology over the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook video, saying it was taken down due to an error. However, several MPs said an apology alone was insufficient and demanded accountability, including legal action against the official responsible. The panel also sought details on Meta's action against controversial and objectionable content on its platforms. The meeting, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, included representatives from Meta, Google, YouTube, X, Snapchat, the Home Ministry and MeitY. The development comes after the Centre summoned Meta over the temporary restriction of PM Modi's post. Separately, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered cases against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and others over allegedly AI-generated and morphed content targeting the Prime Minister.
