India’s Map Move Rattles China: What Naming 27 Places In Arunachal Means?

India has formally standardised the names of 27 places and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh, drawing a sharp response from China. The list includes 21 settlements and localities, four mountain passes, a high-altitude lake and the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial. Several locations, including Jaswant Garh and Thag La, carry military and historical significance linked to the 1962 India-China war. The Ministry of Home Affairs says the move will ensure consistent references across Survey of India maps and government records. China, which calls Arunachal Pradesh “Zangnan” or “South Tibet”, rejected the move as “illegal, null and void” and reiterated its territorial claim. India has consistently rejected China’s claims, maintaining that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India. The latest naming exercise does not alter the Line of Actual Control or resolve the boundary dispute.
