Karur Stampede Flashpoint: TVK-DMK Clash; Former CM Allegedly Blamed For Loss Of Lives
A fresh political confrontation has erupted in Tamil Nadu over the Karur stampede, with the ruling TVK and the DMK trading sharp allegations. TVK Minister Aadhav Arjuna has targeted the DMK, holding it responsible for the incident and alleging administrative lapses, poor crowd control, and failures by police and local authorities. He has also accused former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the loss of lives, while asserting that action will be taken against those responsible. The DMK has responded strongly. Party functionary I. Paranthamen has pointed to the failure to act against Vijay immediately after his return from the Karur campaign in September 2025 as a key lapse, suggesting that earlier intervention could have changed the course of events. Organisation Secretary R.S. Bharathi has also objected to Aadhav Arjuna’s remarks, stating that it is inappropriate to drag the DMK into the issue while being named as an accused, and has indicated that the party is moving towards filing a separate legal case. The political exchange comes against the backdrop of the Karur stampede on September 27, 2025, during a rally linked to then TVK Chief Vijay, where 41 people lost their lives and several others were injured amid severe overcrowding and chaos. Amid the ongoing blame game, Chief Minister Vijay is now set to visit Karur on July 10, his first visit since assuming office, where he is expected to meet the families of the victims. The visit is likely to be closely watched as both a governance step and a key political moment.
