Mamata Banerjee Shuts Door On TMC Rebels, Pushes Opposition Unity Against BJP

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee used the July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata to deliver a politically significant and sharply calibrated message, balancing a call for opposition unity with a firm stance against internal dissent. Addressing a large gathering, she urged opposition parties in West Bengal to set aside long-standing rivalries and come together against the BJP under the broader INDIA bloc framework, signalling a strategic push for a consolidated anti-BJP front.At the same time, Mamata shut the door on leaders who have defected from the TMC, making it clear that there would be no return for rebels. She asserted that the party remains organisationally strong, backed by a deep pool of grassroots workers and youth leaders ready to step up. Targeting defectors, she questioned their political intent and indicated that their actions are indirectly aiding the BJP.She also accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt the Martyrs’ Day programme, a key annual event that commemorates the 1993 Kolkata firing. The rally comes at a time when the TMC is facing internal challenges, including defections and factional tensions, making this a crucial moment for the party’s political direction.
