‘Menon’ Surname Row: VD Satheesan Faces Heat From Kerala Congress Leaders Over Oath Name Choice

Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has found himself at the centre of a political controversy after using his full legal name, “Vadasseri Damodara Menon Satheesan”, during his oath-taking as chief minister and later as MLA of the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly. The move drew criticism from some Congress leaders, who argued that using the “Menon” surname, associated with the Nair community, appeared inconsistent with the party’s inclusive image. Some party insiders reportedly viewed it as political messaging amid identity debates in Kerala. Defending the move, Satheesan rejected caste and political interpretations, saying he used the full name to honour his late parents. He said “Damodara Menon” was his father’s name and added that remembering parents was a matter of pride.
