Savarkar Quiz Question Sparks Political Row In Kerala; Education Department Orders Inquiry

A school quiz question describing V D Savarkar as a freedom fighter who received the most severe punishment from the British has triggered a political controversy in Kerala. The “Freedom Quiz” was conducted for lower primary students in schools across the Kasaragod, Kumbla and Manjeshwar sub-districts. General Education Minister N Samsudheen has ordered an inquiry into who prepared and conducted the quiz, saying it was not authorised by the General Education Department or the Social Science Club. The CPI(M), Left student and youth organisations and IUML leaders have criticised the question, alleging an attempt to glorify Savarkar and introduce Sangh Parivar influence into the education sector.
