SC Proposes Fuel Ban For Uninsured Vehicles, Calls For Automatic E-Challans

The Supreme Court has proposed a series of measures to curb the growing number of uninsured vehicles on Indian roads, including linking fuel supply at petrol pumps to a vehicle's insurance status. The court also directed greater use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and digital verification systems to identify uninsured vehicles and issue e-challans. Noting that nearly 56% of registered vehicles lack valid insurance, the bench said stricter enforcement is necessary to protect road accident victims and ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act. The court also extended mandatory long-term third-party insurance to four years for new cars and six years for new two-wheelers.
