Three-Fold Rise In Assam Budget: Aims At Uplifting People, Says CM Sarma

Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented the State Budget for FY 2026–27 on July 10 in the Assam Legislative Assembly during its ongoing Budget Session. The budget marks a massive outlay of ₹2.85 lakh crore. The budget focuses on economic growth, fiscal discipline and inclusive development.Key highlights include a ₹55,000 crore connectivity push covering roads, railways, bridges and aviation, along with a tenfold rise in capital expenditure to ₹29,000 crore. The government has also set a target to create 2 lakh government jobs across departments. In a major relief measure, VAT on piped natural gas has been reduced from 14.5% to 5%, while the agricultural income tax exemption for small tea growers has been increased from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹10 lakh.Barak Valley gets special attention with proposals like an AIIMS satellite centre in Sribhumi, Secretariat expansion in Silchar and other regional projects. A ₹6,000 crore welfare push has also been announced for women empowerment and support for persons with disabilities.Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma states the budget will drive growth and improve lives, highlighting positive economic indicators and calling it a step towards a stronger Assam.
