Unesco Warns Pakistan Over 'Reconstructions' At Taxila, Threatens Danger List
The United Nations has asked Pakistan to reverse what it described as "reconstructions" at two historical sites in Taxila, warning that failure to do so could result in their inclusion on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger. The sites, Mohra Moradu and Sirkap, are part of the ancient city of Taxila, a major archaeological centre with origins tracing back to the Vedic period. UNESCO reportedly raised concerns over recent interventions, including the replacement of ancient walls with new masonry, saying they could affect the sites' authenticity and integrity. Pakistan's Department of Archaeology and Museums has also flagged concerns over the use of cement. However, Punjab Archaeology Department officials have defended the work, saying the measures are conservation interventions aimed at stabilising vulnerable structures rather than reconstruction.
