From Earning Rs 5K To Becoming A Global Icon, The Fascinating Story Of Aishwarya Rai's Stardom
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is not just a celebrated actress but a symbol of grace, resilience and global stardom. Known for representing Indian cinema on international platforms, her journey to fame was built on patience, persistence and unexpectedly humble beginnings.
Long before Aishwarya Rai Bachchan became a household name, her entry into the entertainment world was modest. Her first three advertisements earned her a total of only Rs 5,000, a figure that feels almost unreal today. At a time when there was no glamour attached to her name, she was simply a young girl taking her first steps into an uncertain industry.
Producer Shailendra Singh recently revisited those early days and shared how he first noticed Aishwarya Rai at Marine Drive when she was around 18 or 19 years old. She had come late in the evening with her parents to meet him and Kunal Kapoor. Back then, she was just starting out and agreed to do three commercials for a very small amount. Her earliest appearance was as a background performer, even playing the role of an extra tied to a pole at Mukesh Mills for a commercial. She later appeared in a Ghrit Kumari Hair Oil advertisement alongside Malvika Tiwari and then featured in another commercial with Arjun Rampal. These small opportunities marked the true beginning of her career.
From these understated starts, Aishwarya Rai’s life changed dramatically when she won the Miss World title in 1994. The victory instantly made her a recognisable face across the country. She soon transitioned into films and built a remarkable career, delivering memorable performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Jodhaa Akbar, Guru, Taal and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Collaborating with acclaimed filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rituparno Ghosh, she showcased her versatility across genres, from intense drama to sweeping romance.
Shailendra Singh has often spoken highly of her character, describing her as dignified, grounded and deeply respectful. According to him, personalities like hers represent the true spirit of the film industry and deserve to be its strongest voices and ambassadors.
Even during her college years, Aishwarya Rai was already gaining attention. She balanced her studies with modelling assignments, appeared in several television commercials and competed in the Miss India pageant, where she finished as the runner-up. Shortly after, she claimed the Miss World crown in 1994. Her acting debut came in 1997 with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar and she entered Bollywood the same year with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. Her first major commercial success arrived with the Tamil romantic film Jeans in 1998, the most expensive Indian film of that time.
Her career reached new heights with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999 and Devdas in 2002, earning her two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. Over the years, she received critical acclaim for powerful roles in Kandukondain Kandukondain, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Provoked, and Guzaarish. At the box office, she delivered major hits including Mohabbatein, Dhoom 2, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, Enthiran, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and the grand historical epics Ponniyin Selvan in 2022 and 2023.
From earning Rs 5,000 to becoming a global icon, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s story is a reminder that legendary journeys often begin in the quietest ways.
