Series Kickoff in Dharamsala

India will commence the ODI series following their victory in a one-off Test against Afghanistan, with the first match scheduled for June 13 in Dharamsala. The team has been concerned about the fitness of both Kohli and Rohit, who are now focused solely on ODIs. Kohli's injury occurred during the IPL 2026 final, while Rohit has been recovering from his own hamstring issues at the Centre of Excellence.

'A Big Miss': Morkel on Kohli's Absence

In a pre-match press conference, Morkel emphasized that Kohli's absence is a significant loss for the team, particularly due to his experience and skill in stabilizing innings during crucial middle overs. He remarked, "Obviously a big miss, with Virat. He is one of the senior players in the team. The way he goes about his innings in that middle phase especially is something we'll miss. Unfortunately, we can't control injuries and all of that. It's a new opportunity for somebody now in this series to go out and fulfil that role. And we're excited and looking forward to that."

Rohit Sharma's Calmness a Welcome Return

Morkel also welcomed Rohit Sharma back into the squad, highlighting the calmness and experience he contributes to the team. He noted that Rohit is training effectively and is keen to participate in the series opener against Afghanistan. Morkel stated, "With Rohit, always nice to have his experience back as well. Just the calmness that he brings to the dressing room is always positive to have. He is training well, he is moving well. So I'm thinking - I know that he's also excited to go tomorrow."
