At just 19 years old, Andreeva became the first Russian woman to win at Roland Garros since Maria Sharapova in 2014. Additionally, she is now recognized as the youngest female champion of this esteemed clay court Grand Slam since Monica Seles in 1992.

Security Incident During Celebration

As Andreeva celebrated her historic win, a couple in the audience attempted to display a Russian flag in honor of her victory. However, their celebration was quickly interrupted by security personnel, who instructed them to put the flag away.

The incident drew attention from both the crowd and social media, with videos of the moment going viral. Although Andreeva's achievement was monumental, this disruption briefly overshadowed her celebration.

Reasons Behind the Flag Removal

The swift action taken by security was in line with the French Open's 'Individual Neutral Athlete' (AIN) protocols. Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, tennis authorities mandated that athletes from Russia and Belarus compete as neutral players.

This policy prohibits the display of national flags, colors, and symbols from these countries in all tournament settings, including spectator areas. The aim is to maintain neutrality and prevent the sporting environment from becoming a platform for political expressions or nationalistic displays.

Consequently, any fan found displaying the Russian or Belarusian flags is required to comply with these regulations, which is why the couple was asked to conceal the flag during the event.
