It is a time when nature dons a beautiful mantle of greenery, marking the arrival of the holiest month for faith and devotion. This month is especially dear to Lord Shiva. Throughout this period, devotees perform special rituals to please their deity, undertake the Kanwar Yatra, and perform *Rudrabhishek* to invite peace and happiness into their homes. Let us find out in this article when the holy month of Sawan begins.
When does the month of Sawan begin?
This year, the month of Sawan commences with a very auspicious alignment. According to the *Panchang* (Hindu almanac), the *Pratipada Tithi* (first day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) begins at 8:05 PM on July 29; however, considering the significance of *Udayatithi* (the sunrise date), the holy month is considered to start on Thursday, July 30.
It will conclude on August 28, coinciding with *Sawan Purnima* (the full moon day). A highlight this year is that Sawan begins under the *Ayushman Yoga*. It is believed that worship performed during this auspicious *Yoga* blesses individuals with good health and longevity.
Major fasts and festivals during this month
Every Monday during the month of Sawan holds special significance. Devotees observe the *Sawan Somvar* (Monday) fast and offer prayers to seek the abundant blessings of Bholenath. Additionally, some people begin the *Solah Somvar* (Sixteen Mondays) fast during this period.
Apart from Mondays, the *Mangala Gauri* fast—dedicated to Goddess Parvati—is observed every Tuesday of Sawan. This fast is considered highly auspicious for marital bliss and for bringing happiness and prosperity to the household.
