Body recovered from Cheshire lake after 17-year-old boy went missing while swimming at beauty spot
A body was recovered from a lake in Cheshire on Wednesday during the search for a 17-year-old boy who went missing after entering the water at Pick Mere, a popular beauty spot near Knutsford and Northwich, Cheshire Police said.
This comes after emergency services had launched a large-scale search operation on Tuesday afternoon after reports that the teenager had failed to resurface after swimming in the lake.
Search efforts involved specialist boat teams from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, rescue crews and a police helicopter. Authorities later recovered a body from the lake, which police believe to be that of the missing boy, although formal identification is yet to be completed, BBC reported.
Officers said the teenager’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specially trained personnel. Police added that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
“This was a young boy who had his entire life ahead of him,” Chief Inspector Jamie Lewis was quoted by the BBC as saying. “Our thoughts remain with the boy's family, friends and everyone who knew him,” he added.
The incident comes amid a spell of exceptionally warm weather across parts of the UK, during which multiple fatal water-related incidents have been reported. Among them was the death of a 12-year-old boy whose body was recently recovered from the River Ribble in Lancashire.
Chief Inspector Lewis warned people against entering open water during hot weather, saying lakes and rivers can contain hidden hazards including strong currents, mud banks and submerged objects.
“Residents must be aware of the potential deadly consequences. Don't be tempted to put your life at risk by cooling off in open water,” he said.
Police also urged visitors to Pick Mere to park responsibly after residents reported severe congestion around the lake area during the Bank Holiday weekend.
