US-China Trade War: Trump Slaps 245% Tariff on Chinese Imports in Escalating Trade War
The Trump administration has unveiled a drastic new tariff of up to 245% on Chinese imports, intensifying the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China. The White House outlined the decision in a fact sheet released late Tuesday, framing it as a direct response to Beijing’s export restrictions and retaliatory tariffs.
“China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions,” the White House stated, positioning the move as part of President Trump’s “America First Trade Policy.”
Officials accused China of strategically limiting exports of critical high-tech materials, including gallium, germanium, and antimony—elements vital for defense, aerospace, and semiconductor production. More recently, China halted exports of six heavy rare earth metals and rare earth magnets, further squeezing global supply chains.
“A few months ago, China banned exports to the United States of gallium, germanium, antimony, and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications,” the statement noted. “Just this week, China suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals, as well as rare earth magnets, in order to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world.”
Escalating Trade War
In a retaliatory move, China increased its tariffs on US goods to 125% last Friday, shortly after President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%. The White House also announced a 90-day pause on additional tariffs for other nations as trade negotiations continue.
“More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals,” the White House said. “As a result, the individualized higher tariffs are currently paused amid these discussions, except for China, which retaliated.”
Additionally, the administration has launched a national security probe into the import of strategic resources, highlighting concerns over US dependence on foreign materials crucial for advanced manufacturing and defense.
President Trump, who has prioritized trade reform in his second term, framed the decision as part of his broader effort to protect American industries and secure supply chains.
“On Day One, President Trump initiated his America First Trade Policy to make America’s economy great again,” the statement declared.
