Massive Quake Triggers Panic and Tsunami Warning in Southern Philippines
A massive offshore earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale jolted the southern Philippines early Friday, sending shockwaves of fear across several provinces.According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the quake struck at 9:43 am, with its epicenter about 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, a coastal town in Davao Oriental province. The tremor, which originated from a shallow fault just 10 kilometers deep, is expected to cause aftershocks and structural damage.
Shortly after the quake, videos flooded social media showing chaos as residents rushed out of homes and buildings. One clip showed patients and medical staff evacuating the Tagum City Davao Regional Medical Center, some wheeling out patients and others clutching trees for balance.
Another video, reportedly from Butuan City in Mindanao, captured scenes of panicked people screaming, running, and sitting on the streets as the ground shook violently. The footage vividly depicted the moment of fear and confusion that gripped communities across the region.
Tsunami Warning Issued
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued a warning soon after, stating that It further warned that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) could hit parts of the Philippines, while smaller waves may reach Indonesia and Palau.
Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, cautioned residents that tsunami waves could strike six coastal provinces, including Davao Oriental, within two hours after the quake.
Authorities on High Alert
Emergency response teams have been deployed, and local authorities are assessing potential damage. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, with the Philippine Coast Guard and disaster management units on standby for rescue and relief operations.
