After Interim Bail in ₹9 Crore Debt Case, Rajpal Yadav Demands Separate Smoking Zones in Jails

Actor Rajpal Yadav was recently granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in a cheque-bounce case involving nearly ₹9 crore in outstanding dues, allowing him temporary release from Tihar Jail until the next hearing scheduled for March 18.

Upon arriving at his ancestral village in Shahjahanpur, Yadav expressed deep gratitude to his fans, the film fraternity, and well-wishers for their support during the legal ordeal. In his first public remarks since his release, he made an unconventional appeal to prison authorities: prisons should introduce designated smoking areas for inmates, similar to facilities provided at major railway stations and airports.

Yadav clarified that his suggestion is not to promote tobacco use but to acknowledge the realities of life behind bars, advocating humane considerations for incarcerated individuals. He stressed that jails should be more than punishment centres – they should function as reform and rehabilitation hubs, providing structured opportunities for inmates to change their lives.

He also highlighted the difficulty of judging a person’s character solely on their mistakes, underlining the need to distinguish between hardened criminals and those who erred once. Yadav said his legal team would officially address all case-related questions at an upcoming press conference, noting he plans to avoid media interactions for a short period due to family commitments.

Yadav’s remarks come amid ongoing attention to his legal battle that started with a loan taken over a decade ago for his directorial venture, which snowballed into a substantial debt due to unpaid dues and bounced cheques. Despite the legal challenges, his call for better prison amenities and reform has sparked discussions on how inmate welfare can be balanced with justice and discipline.
