Mohali: A doctor has been booked for allegedly uploading and tagging personal photographs of a girl and her male friend on social media with the intent to defame her.

According to the complaint, two fake Instagram IDs were created, and the victim's brothers' accounts were tagged in the pictures to malign her image within the family. Acting on the girl's statement, police registered a case under relevant sections of the IT Act against the doctor, a dentist from Jalalabad, Fazilka.

The complainant, originally from Jalalabad and currently living in Kumbhra, Mohali, alleged that her personal photos — once shared with a mutual friend — were misused and uploaded in a distorted manner. She accused the doctor, with whom she worked for several years, of being behind the act. During questioning, the doctor admitted tagging the pictures but claimed she did so at the complainant's request. She told police that the complainant asked her to create fake IDs and tag her brother and sister-in-law in the posts, as her family was arranging her marriage elsewhere. However, she failed to produce supporting WhatsApp chats, saying the messages were deleted.

Police said the matter was reviewed, after which a case was registered against the accused. Further investigation is under way.
