Jimny 5-Door Exports to Japan Surge, Suzuki Temporarily Stops Bookings
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door, manufactured in India, is witnessing an extraordinary response in Japan, leading to a temporary halt in bookings. Suzuki Corporation has confirmed that the overwhelming demand has exceeded initial expectations, prompting the company to prioritise deliveries before reopening orders. This surge in interest highlights the stark contrast between the SUV’s reception in Japan and India, where sales have been comparatively moderate. The Jimny 5-door’s compact size, off-road capabilities, and unique appeal have made it a perfect fit for Japan’s automobile market.
Jimny 5-Door Sees Massive Demand in Japan
Maruti Suzuki recently began exporting the India-made Jimny 5-door to Japan, where it is sold under the name ‘Jimny Nomade.’ The compact off-roader, produced at the company’s Gurugram facility, has become the second Indian-manufactured model to be exported to Japan, following the Fronx. With 50,000 bookings recorded in a short span, Suzuki has decided to temporarily pause further reservations to focus on fulfilling existing orders efficiently.
Key Differences in the Japan-Spec Jimny
While the overall design of the Japan-spec Jimny remains largely unchanged, there are a few notable differences compared to its Indian counterpart. The SUV is available in two exclusive colour options: Chiffon Ivory Metallic with a black roof and Jungle Green. However, Japan misses out on the Kinetic Yellow shade, which has become an iconic colour for the Jimny in India.
Inside, the dashboard layout remains similar, but Japan’s version gets grey and black upholstery with a smaller touchscreen infotainment system. Additionally, it is equipped with advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and heated ORVMs and front seats.
Why Is Jimny More Popular in Japan Than in India?
Despite being an iconic off-road vehicle, the Jimny 5-door did not receive an overwhelmingly positive response in the Indian market. Within the first nine months of its launch, it sold approximately 17,000 units, a number significantly lower than Japan’s current demand. One of the primary reasons for this contrast is the difference in market preferences.
In India, the Jimny 5-door competes with larger SUVs that offer more space, greater practicality, and competitive pricing. However, Japan has a well-established demand for compact, lightweight vehicles, especially those with off-road capabilities. The Jimny perfectly fits the needs of Japanese consumers who value smaller, efficient, and rugged vehicles suited for urban and rural terrains alike.
Features and Safety Highlights
The Jimny 5-door for Japan retains most of the features from its Indian version, including automatic climate control, push start/stop button, LED automatic headlamps with washers, fog lamps, and body-coloured ORVMs. It rides on 15-inch alloy wheels and comes with dark green glass for added privacy.
Safety remains a priority, with the Jimny offering six airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and other advanced safety features. The addition of ADAS technology further enhances its appeal in Japan, making it a safer and more modern offering.
Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Jimny 5-door is powered by the familiar 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 105 bhp and 134 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. The SUV also comes with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system, featuring a manual transfer case and selectable driving modes, including 2WD-high, 4WD-high, and 4WD-low, making it a capable performer on challenging terrains.
Pricing in Japan
The Jimny 5-door in Japan is priced between 2,651,000 yen and 2,750,000 yen, which roughly translates to Rs 14.86 lakh to Rs 15.41 lakh at current exchange rates. The premium pricing is justified by additional features, safety enhancements, and the growing demand for compact SUVs in the Japanese market.
What’s Next for the Jimny?
With the current demand surpassing expectations, Suzuki is working on ramping up production to meet customer orders. While bookings remain temporarily halted, they are expected to resume once the company streamlines the delivery process. Given its success in Japan, it will be interesting to see if the Jimny 5-door gains traction in other international markets as well.
For now, while the Jimny 5-door may have had a slow start in India, its phenomenal success in Japan proves that it remains a highly desirable SUV with a strong fan base.
