Tata Remains No. 1 Electric Car Manufacturer In India; Crosses 10,000 Sales Mark For The First Time
India's electric vehicle revolution reached a significant milestone in May 2026, as the country's electric passenger vehicle segment recorded its highest-ever monthly sales. The industry crossed the 26,000-unit mark for the first time, highlighting the growing acceptance of EVs among Indian consumers.
At the forefront of this growth is Tata Motors, which has once again emerged as the country's leading electric vehicle manufacturer. The company achieved a historic feat by selling more than 10,000 electric cars in a single month for the first time.
The achievement becomes even more impressive considering that the Indian electric passenger vehicle market grew by around 80 per cent year-on-year, while Tata Motors EV sales surged by an even stronger 102 per cent during the same period.
For comparison, Tata Motors sold 5,068 electric cars in May 2025. The company has already sold 45,158 electric vehicles during 2026 so far, underlining its dominance in the rapidly expanding India electric vehicle market .
The recently refreshed Tata Punch EV , launched on 20 February 2026, has also emerged as a strong volume driver. Together, these two models have played a crucial role in helping Tata Motors achieve record-breaking sales figures.
