Got An India Post Parcel Message? Beware, It’s A Scam, Says PIB

Newspoint
Scammers are once again using trusted government names to deceive citizens, and this time India Post is their chosen disguise. The Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government’s official fact-checking wing, has exposed a fraudulent parcel notification circulating via SMS. The message falsely claims to be from India Post and urges users to act quickly, an attempt to steal personal or financial details.

What Does the Fake Message Claim?

The misleading text is crafted to appear like an official postal alert and reads:

“Your package has arrived at the warehouse and we attempted delivery twice but were unable due to incomplete address information. Please update your address details within 48 hours otherwise your package will be returned.”

It also includes a deceptive link designed to look trustworthy:

PIB Fact Check has confirmed that this link is not genuine.

India Post Does Not Ask for Personal Info via SMS

To clear the confusion, PIB shared an advisory on X (formerly Twitter), reminding users that India Post never sends links asking to update delivery details. The alert stated:

“Have you received an SMS stating your package has arrived at the warehouse, asking you to update address details? Beware! This message is fake. India Post never sends such messages asking to update your address for delivering articles. Never click on such fraudulent links.”

How These Scams Trap You

Cybercriminals often replicate government-style messages to create urgency. If a user clicks the link, they may unknowingly:

  • Reveal personal details like phone number, address, or identity information
  • Expose bank or credit card credentials
  • Download malware onto their device

Tips to Protect Yourself

To avoid falling victim to such scams, follow these safety practices:

  • Do not tap on unknown links or submit personal data to unfamiliar websites
  • Always check the sender’s domain—authorised communications use .gov.in
  • If you’re expecting a parcel, contact India Post directly through the official site or helpline
  • Report suspicious texts to reportphishing@cybercrime.gov.in

Staying alert and verifying before you click can help protect your personal and financial information from online fraudsters.
