Big UPI Update: NPCI’s AI-Powered Payment System Could Change How India Pays

Newspoint
UPI payments in India are on the verge of a major technological leap as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) works on an AI-powered payment framework that could automate everyday financial transactions. The upcoming system, called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), aims to enable AI agents to carry out tasks such as bill payments , subscription renewals and online purchases on behalf of users—while ensuring every transaction happens only with their permission. The move is expected to make digital payments faster, more convenient and highly secure without changing the way people currently use UPI.

What is the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP)?

The Unified Agent Protocol (UAP) is a new framework being developed to integrate artificial intelligence into India's digital payment ecosystem. It is designed to allow AI-powered assistants to communicate securely with the UPI network and perform authorised financial transactions.

Unlike traditional payment systems that require users to manually approve every step, AI agents under UAP will be able to complete selected tasks automatically based on user-defined instructions and permissions.

If implemented successfully, India could become one of the first countries to introduce AI-driven payment services at a national level.

NPCI is leading the development of the new AI payment system

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI platform, is spearheading the development of the protocol. It is working closely with technology companies and industry experts to build a framework that is secure, scalable and compatible with future innovations.

The goal is to create a system that can be adopted across multiple platforms while maintaining the high security standards that have made UPI one of the world's most successful digital payment networks.

How AI agents will work for UPI users

The proposed framework will introduce a structured process before any AI agent is allowed to handle payments.

Each AI agent will:

  • Be officially registered within the system.
  • Undergo identity verification.
  • Receive permission to perform only authorised transactions.
  • Operate according to rules and limits defined by the user.

This layered security approach is expected to ensure that only trusted AI agents can access payment services, significantly reducing the chances of fraud or misuse.
