What Is the New Plastic LPG Cylinder Made Of?

The newly introduced Bharat Gas Lite cylinder is crafted using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) combined with advanced fibreglass composite material. Unlike metal, this material does not corrode or rust, ensuring longer life and improved safety.

Launched initially in Goa, the HDPE LPG cylinder is expected to roll out across multiple cities and eventually reach all major metros.

Weight and LPG Capacity: Nearly 50% Lighter

One of the biggest advantages of the plastic LPG cylinder is its reduced weight.

• LPG capacity: 14.2 kg
• Cylinder weight: ~17 kg
• Total weight: 30–33 kg

Bharat Gas Lite (plastic LPG cylinder)

• LPG capacity: 10 kg
• Cylinder weight: 5.9 kg
• Total weight: 15.9 kg

This makes the new lightweight LPG cylinder far easier for households, especially women and senior citizens, as well as delivery personnel.

Enhanced Safety Features You Should Know

Safety is where the plastic LPG cylinder truly stands out.

• Designed to withstand 120 kg test pressure, compared to 80 kg in metal cylinders
• Corrosion-free and rust-free body
• In case of an external fire, the HDPE shell melts gradually, allowing controlled gas leakage instead of a sudden explosion
• Significantly lowers the risk of bursting under extreme conditions

These improvements make the HDPE LPG cylinder a safer choice for modern homes.

Smart Design With Visible Gas Level

Another user-friendly feature is the translucent slot built into the cylinder body. This allows consumers to easily check how much gas is left - eliminating guesswork and last-minute surprises while cooking.

The blue-and-yellow colour scheme also clearly distinguishes it from traditional red cylinders.

Plastic LPG Cylinder Price and Security Deposit Details

Here’s what consumers need to know about the cost:

Launch phase swap:

• Replace an existing metal cylinder with a plastic LPG cylinder for an additional ₹300 security deposit

New connection during launch:

• ₹2,500

After full roll-out:

• Security deposit of around ₹3,350

For comparison, the deposit on metal LPG cylinders is approximately ₹2,200.

Importantly, consumers can return the plastic LPG cylinder if unsatisfied and switch back to the traditional option.

Nationwide Rollout Plans

Bharat Petroleum plans to expand the availability of the plastic LPG cylinder to at least 10 cities in the next phase, followed by a wider rollout across all metro cities. Goa marks the first step in this nationwide transition.
