According to government sources, “Solar on every rooftop, savings in every home, PM Surya Ghar, Through the free electricity scheme , 40 lakh families are now moving towards zero electricity bills. This is a symbol of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an energy self-reliant India.”


The initiative aims to encourage households to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar panels, reducing monthly expenses while contributing to India's renewable energy goals.

Rooftop Solar Capacity Records Strong Growth


Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that solar systems have now been installed in 40 lakh homes under the PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme. He highlighted the rapid expansion of rooftop solar energy in the country and its growing impact on ordinary citizens.

Sharing the progress, he stated, “India is continuously setting new milestones in the field of green energy. The addition of 2.7 GW rooftop solar capacity in the country between January and March 2026 is proof that clean energy has now become a mass participation movement. The rooftops of millions of families are not only meeting their electricity needs but are also becoming a new source of income.”

The figures underline how rooftop solar installations are becoming increasingly popular among households looking to cut energy costs and generate additional earnings through surplus power.




India Moving Towards Energy Self-Reliance


Emphasising the broader vision behind the initiative, Joshi added, “Under the visionary leadership of the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is rapidly advancing on the path of energy self-reliance, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.”

The government views rooftop solar adoption as a key component of India's long-term strategy to strengthen energy security while reducing carbon emissions.

Rooftop Solar Capacity Reaches 23.5 GW


Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy also praised the rapid growth of rooftop solar infrastructure across the country. According to him, India's cumulative rooftop solar capacity reached 23.5 GW by March 2026, reflecting strong momentum in the renewable energy sector.

Focus on Faster Implementation Across States


The Centre is also working to speed up implementation of renewable energy programmes in various states. During a recent review of the power sector in Mizoram, officials assessed the progress of both the PM-KUSUM Scheme and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

The state administration was encouraged to accelerate beneficiary registrations and boost the pace of rooftop solar installations to ensure wider adoption of the schemes.
