Railways New Rule 2026: Forgot Your Reserved Ticket? Indian Railways May Still Let You Travel

Railways New Rule has brought welcome relief for passengers travelling with a reserved ticket booked from a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter. If you accidentally leave your physical railway ticket at home, your journey may not necessarily come to an end. Under certain conditions, Indian Railways allows passengers to continue travelling after proper verification of their ticket. The rule is designed to help genuine travellers while maintaining strict verification procedures.

Here's everything you need to know about the rule, who can benefit from it, and the latest upgrade to the railway reservation system.

Forgot your reserved railway ticket? Here's what you should do

Passengers travelling with a reserved paper ticket purchased from a PRS counter should immediately inform the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) if they realise their ticket has been left behind.

The next step is to contact a family member or an authorised representative and ask them to carry the original ticket to the station master at the station where the journey began. Once the station master verifies the original ticket, an official message is sent to the railway authorities at the next station. Railway staff on board the train then verify the details, and if everything matches, the passenger may be permitted to continue the journey according to railway rules.

This process is intended to assist passengers who have genuinely purchased a valid ticket but forgot to carry it while travelling.

Who can use this facility?

The relief is available only to passengers holding a physical reserved ticket issued from a PRS booking counter. Since these tickets require physical verification, Indian Railways has established this procedure to ensure genuine passengers are not unnecessarily penalised for an honest mistake.

However, travellers must cooperate with railway officials and complete the verification process before the journey can continue without complications.

Online ticket holders are not covered under this rule

The provision does not apply to passengers travelling with e-tickets booked through the IRCTC website or mobile application.

Since online tickets are digitally stored and can be verified electronically, there is no requirement for physical ticket submission. As a result, this special verification process is limited exclusively to passengers carrying paper tickets issued from railway reservation counters.
