Lucknow Horror: Forced to Lick the Ground

In the first case, a 60-year-old Dalit man, Rampal Rawat, was allegedly forced to lick the ground near a temple on the outskirts of Lucknow after being accused of urinating there on Diwali evening.

According to police, the accused, identified as Swami Kant alias “Pammu”, has been arrested and booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The incident took place at the Sheetla Maataa temple in Kakori. Rawat, who had gone there to drink water, was confronted by Pammu, who accused him of urinating near the temple. Despite Rawat’s explanation that the spot was wet because he spilled water, the accused allegedly hurled casteist slurs and forced him to lick the ground.

Rawat’s grandson, Mukesh Kumar, told PTI that his grandfather suffers from breathing issues and may have accidentally urinated while coughing.

“He got scared and obeyed when Pammu forced him. Later, he was made to wash the spot,” Kumar said.

Police officials said they are investigating the details of the humiliation.

“The victim says he was made to lick it, while the accused claims he only asked him to touch the spot,” a police officer told news agencies .

The incident triggered an avalanche of political reactions.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called the act “inhumane and humiliating.”

“Someone’s mistake doesn’t mean they should be punished in such a degrading way. Only change can bring real change,” he posted on X.

Meanwhile, the Congress claimed the accused was an RSS worker, terming the incident a “blot on humanity.” The party accused the BJP and RSS of harboring “anti-Dalit attitudes.” However, police have denied any political connection, stating that the accused had “no links with any organisation.”

Madhya Pradesh Case: Beaten and Forced to Drink Urine

In another horrifying incident from Bhind district in Madhya Pradesh, a 25-year-old Dalit man was allegedly abducted, beaten, and forced to drink urine by his former employer and two accomplices.

The accused, identified as Sonu Barua, Alok Sharma, and Chhotu Ojha, have been arrested under the SC/ST Act and several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the police, the victim was kidnapped from his in-laws’ home in Gwalior, taken to Bhind in an SUV, and brutally assaulted after he quit working as Barua’s driver.

“They beat me with a plastic pipe and forced me to drink urine from a bottle,” the victim told reporters. “Later, they tied me with an iron chain and humiliated me again.”

The shocking account has sparked widespread outrage in the state, with opposition parties accusing the government of failing to protect Dalits and demanding stronger enforcement of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Nationwide Outrage and Political Repercussions

Both cases have reignited debates about caste-based violence and the ineffectiveness of law enforcement in protecting marginalised communities. Social activists have called for swift justice, while political leaders have linked the incidents to a larger pattern of social discrimination under BJP rule.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has also sought reports from state authorities. Human rights groups are demanding strict punishment for the accused and greater accountability from local administrations.

These back-to-back incidents—one forcing a man to lick the ground, another to drink urine—have not only exposed societal cruelty but also tested the country’s conscience.
