Delhi Govt Launches ₹50-Crore Handicraft Training Scheme for Youth and Artisans

The Delhi government has unveiled a ₹50-crore scheme aimed at reviving traditional crafts while creating employment opportunities for young people and artisans. Announced by Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the initiative will be implemented by the Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board in the year 2025-26. The program is expected to benefit over 13,900 individuals through specialized training, providing a balance of heritage preservation and modern skill development.
Preserving Traditional Crafts with Modern Skills
Speaking at the launch, Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa highlighted the dual purpose of the scheme. “This scheme aims to preserve our centuries-old techniques of Indian handloom and create jobs for young people,” he said. The program focuses not only on protecting the rich legacy of handicrafts but also on making artisans future-ready by incorporating modern technologies. “We are blending heritage crafts with AI and digital skills to make our artisans future ready,” he added.Employment and Self-Reliance at the Core
The government has structured the scheme to create both wage employment and self-employment opportunities. Out of the total beneficiaries, the initiative guarantees at least 20% jobs in self-employment and 50% in wage-based roles. By ensuring structured employment outcomes, the scheme directly aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and supports sustainable livelihoods for diverse communities.Training Programs Tailored for Youth
The official release outlined various courses that will be offered under the scheme. Training modules include apparel merchandising, IT help desk support, self-employed tailoring, khadi and handloom fashion, and a 10-day entrepreneurship development program. These courses are designed to prepare participants for both traditional and contemporary job markets, equipping them with skills to navigate multiple career paths.Stipends, Toolkits, and Certificates for Trainees
To encourage participation, the Delhi government has announced financial and practical support for trainees. Each participant will receive a monthly stipend of ₹400 for up to five months. Toolkits will be provided to 2,500 artisans to help them begin work independently after training. Additionally, 500 participants will be offered exposure visits to gain practical insights into real-world industries. Certificates will also be awarded upon completion, enhancing employment opportunities.You may also like
