PUNE/KOLHAPUR: The Pune-Solapur highway traffic was closed since the early hours of Wednesday at Lamboti bridge near Mohol town due to the Sina River water flooding the area. Vehicles were being diverted via Tembhurni, Kruduwadi and Barshi.

The floods caused by heavy rain over the last couple of days have disrupted road and rail traffic, including the services operated by the state transport corporation, between Pune and Solapur.

The railway authorities cancelled five trains including the Solapur-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express, Hazur Sahib Nanded Vande Bharat Express, Hutatma Superfast Express, Solapur-Pune Express and diverted five other trains due to Sina River water touching two railway crossing bridges.

The flooding is mainly on account of continuing discharge of water from the dams upstream of the Sina River even as the rainfall activity reduced significantly since Tuesday evening. Only parts of Barshi taluka in Solapur district recorded 54mm rain on Tuesday. The discharge from the upstream dams had come down at the rate of 1 lakh cubic feet per second (cusecs) from the 2 lakh cusecs a day ago.

The Solapur-Vijaypur highway was inundated by floodwater, and the Solapur-Kolhapur highway was partially inundated. The Sainagar-Mysuru weekly express was diverted via Kuruduvadi, Miraj Junction and Hubbali.

The CSMT Mumbai-Chennai, LTT Mumbai to Coimbatore, Pune Hyderabad express trains were diverted via Kurduwadi, Bidar, Kalaburgi and Wadi. The trains that left from Mumbai for Solapur were terminated at Kurduvadi and the passengers were drive to Solapur on board ST buses.

Solapur railway division officials said help desks have been set up for passengers at Kurduwadi, Dharashiv, Solapur and Latur railway stations.

Maharashtra state road transport corporation (MSRTC) Pune division officials said close to 40 buses left for Dharashiv, Latur and Beed but their return trip to Pune was not confirmed. “There are some trips which have been cancelled too, and a close eye is being kept,” MSRTC Pune divisional controller Arun Siya said.

Commuters travelling via road too have complained about heavy traffic jams at parts of the Pune-Solapur highway. Meanwhile, the rescue operation is near its end. In the morning, food packets were delivered to residents stuck in Sultanpur village with the help of an Army helicopter. The people stuck in Darfal village are being rescued.

The schools and colleges from Solapur's rural areas will remain closed today also.
