The Kaushambi LPG Tanker Blast Was Over in Minutes. For Some Families, It Changed Everything
There is something unsettling about watching CCTV footage of a disaster. Not because the video is graphic, but because, for the first few seconds, everything appears completely normal. The footage, released on July 3 from the Sihori Toll Plaza in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district, begins like any other morning on a busy highway. Vehicles move through the toll lanes, staff carry out their routine duties, and travelers continue on their way. Then an LPG tanker enters the frame. Within moments, a normal Friday morning turns into one of the deadliest highway accidents the region has seen this year.
What Happened on June 26?
The accident happened on June 26 at around 6:45 a.m. at the Sihori Toll Plaza in the Kokhraj area of Kaushambi district. According to officials, the LPG tanker was traveling through the area when it reportedly lost control near the toll plaza. CCTV footage shows the tanker hitting a divider before crashing into the toll booths. What initially appeared to be a traffic accident quickly became something far worse.
Witnesses later recalled seeing gas escaping from the tanker. Moments later, a massive fire broke out. Within minutes, flames engulf the toll plaza and nearby vehicles, sending thick black smoke into the sky.
The Human Cost
Four people, including the tanker driver and toll plaza employees, lost their lives in the incident, while several others sustained serious burn injuries. The explosion also destroyed vehicles parked near the toll plaza, including 16 motorcycles and two cars. For many local residents, the most haunting memory is not the explosion itself but the massive fire that followed. The flames were reportedly so intense that they could be seen from nearly two kilometers away.
Why the CCTV Footage Matters
Accidents involving hazardous materials are not uncommon, but they rarely unfold in front of a camera. The CCTV footage released this week does not answer every question about what happened that morning. Investigations are still ongoing. But it does show something official. Reports often cannot capture how quickly everyday life can disappear. At 6:45 a.m., it was an ordinary workday. Just minutes later, four lives had been lost.
