SL Bhyrappa, Padma awardee Kannada novalist, dies at 94; PM Narendra Modi mourns passing
BENGALURU: Noted novelist and philosopher SL Bhyrappa died on Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest at a hospital in Bengaluru. He was 94-years-old.
Bhyrappa was admitted at Rashtrotthana Hospital in the city.
As per a hospital release, Bhyrappa suffered cardiac arrest at around 2.38pm.
Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa, popularly known as SL Bhyrappa was a famous Kannada novelist , philosopher and screenwriter.
He was born on August 20, 1931 in Hassan, Karnataka. He was one of the top selling authors in Kannada language for over 25 years. Many of his works were translated into Hindi and other languages.
PM Narendra Modi also posted on his X account: " In the passing of Shri S.L. Bhyrappa Ji, we have lost a towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India. A fearless and timeless thinker, he profoundly enriched Kannada literature with his thought-provoking works. His writings inspired generations to reflect, question and engage more deeply with society. His unwavering passion for our history and culture will continue to inspire minds for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti."
His first novel, Bheemakaya was published in 1958. Since then, Bhyrappa authored about 25 novels. He also served as a professor of Philosophy for over three decades at NCERT, Delhi.
SL Bhyrappa was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015 and the Padma Shri in 2016. In 2023, the Government of India honoured Bhyrappa with the Padma Bhushan Award for his contribution in the field of literature & education.
