Guwahati: Tezpur University (TU) teachers have joined students in protest against vice-chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh for allegedly making disrespectful remarks about Zubeen Garg.

The Tezpur University Teachers’ Association (TUTA) has called for Singh’s removal, citing “financial and administrative irregularities” that they claim have compromised the university’s academic and institutional integrity.

TUTA released a statement condemning the VC’s remarks about Zubeen, which they say deeply hurt public sentiments. The student protests began a week ago, opposing student council elections being held on Sept 20, just a day after Zubeen’s death. The protests intensified when the public relations officer of TU, Samaresh Barman, resigned last week, saying, “I can no longer be part of a system that suppresses our voices.”

TUTA accused Singh of awarding contracts that resulted in low-quality infrastructure work at the university. They submitted a memorandum to Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, detailing these allegations and demanding Singh’s removal and a thorough inquiry.

Prof. Kusum Bania, TUTA president, expressed concerns about the university’s operations under Singh. The memorandum highlights alleged financial irregularities, including ‘questionable’ procurement practices, contract awards, disposal of scrap, and construction funded by the Higher Education Financing Agency, resulting in multiple instances of “poor-quality infrastructure” works. “Transparency and accountability are lacking in contract management,” the release said.

Public Interest Protection Committee, Tezpur, on Sunday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu about the alleged disrespect to Zubeen, saying Sing’s remarks created mistrust and promoted enmity, demonstrating his unsuitability for his position at TU.
