Gurugram Horror: Man Allegedly Burns Girlfriend Alive After She Discovers He Is Married
A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting his girlfriend on fire after she discovered that he was already married. The accused, identified as Sunil Kumar, was taken into custody by Gurugram police and has been remanded to two days of police custody as the investigation continues.
According to police, the incident came to light on June 19 when a 23-year-old woman, Divya Kataria from Basai village, was admitted to Artemis Hospital with critical burn injuries. She was later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for advanced treatment.
Initially, both the victim and her mother declined to file a police complaint. However, Kataria succumbed to her injuries on June 27. Following her death, her cousin filed a complaint at the Sector-9A police station on June 30.
In his complaint, the cousin alleged that Kataria had revealed to him on June 22 that Sunil Kumar had poured kerosene on her, set her ablaze, and threatened to kill her as well as her mother and sister if she disclosed the truth.
Police investigation revealed that the two had known each other for more than a year after meeting at Kumar's gold-buying shop, where Kataria had gone to sell jewellery. Their acquaintance eventually developed into a relationship.
Investigators said the couple argued on June 18 after Kataria learned that Kumar was married. In an effort to settle their differences, she booked a flat at Central Park on Sohna Road, where they spent the night.
Police alleged that another argument broke out the following morning, during which Kumar set Kataria on fire. He later took her to Artemis Hospital for treatment.
Following the complaint, police arrested Kumar and recovered a bottle of kerosene from his shop along with his mobile phone. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
