Why Imtiaz Ali Thinks Love Aaj Kal 2 Was a Mistake: ‘It Was Never Meant to Be a Sequel’

The choices made behind the scenes of filmmaking often determine whether a movie succeeds creatively or fails at the box office. When directors and producers build on the success of an older, beloved hit, they face massive pressure to deliver a story that satisfies loyal fans while still making money for the studio. Sadly, when business goals get prioritised over genuine artistic passion, the resulting project can lose its unique charm. This is exactly what happened to one of Bollywood's most talked-about romantic films from recent years. Reflecting openly on his career choices, famous director Imtiaz Ali has shared some surprisingly honest thoughts about his 2020 movie, Love Aaj Kal 2. The filmmaker explained that looking back at the project, he now views the entire production as an unsuccessful experiment that taught him a valuable lesson about the dangers of forced commercial branding.

Imtiaz Ali shared these candid reflections during a promotional interview for his highly anticipated upcoming movie, Main Vaapas Aaunga . While talking about the rising trend of sequels and franchises in Hindi cinema, he revealed that the 2020 film starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan was never meant to be a continuation of his 2009 hit movie starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone.
