"I Was Very Aggressive": Imtiaz Ali Explains How a Poster Dispute Led to His Kidnapping

The cinematic worlds crafted by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali are celebrated for their organic emotional journeys, chance encounters, and profound personal transformations. However, a recent interview reveals that the director's real-life experiences during his youth were just as dramatic as the screenplays he creates. While promoting his highly anticipated romantic drama Main Vaapas Aaunga, Ali walked down memory lane to revisit his formative student days at Delhi University's prestigious Hindu College in 1993. He vividly recalled a tense, campus-wide confrontation that escalated into a late-night abduction, an experience that unexpectedly shifted from a terrifying situation into a story of connection.

A Midnight Cycle Rickshaw Abduction

The conflict ignited during the peak of intense university student politics, characterized by fierce campus rivalries between major student wings like the NSUI and ABVP. The friction began when political supporters pasted an election banner squarely across the front face of Ali's hostel building.

Wanting to protect the visual aesthetic of the architecture, Ali took it upon himself to peel off the poster and carefully re-paste it onto a less prominent side wall. The student group looked at the action as a direct political insult. A few nights later around 2:00 AM, a frantic hostel mate warned Ali to flee, but a rival political faction intercepted him. They forced the future filmmaker into a cycle rickshaw and transported him to a secluded government quarter to face questioning by their gang leader.

The Misunderstanding and the Slap

What could have been a horrific, violent encounter quickly de-escalated when the gang leader began interrogating Ali about removing the campaign banners. Ali calmly explained that his motivation had absolutely nothing to do with student politics; he had merely relocated the poster to keep the front facade of the building looking clean.

Once the political leader independently verified the facts and realized that the banner had been moved rather than destroyed, the entire atmosphere shifted. Annoyed by the unnecessary drama, the gang leader turned around and slapped his own political associate twice for triggering a massive miscommunication, instantly diffusing the danger.

Forging Beautiful Connections Through Chaos

Reflecting on the bizarre turn of events, Ali admitted that the incident profoundly influenced his perspective on human nature. Admitting that living in Delhi at the time had made him quite aggressive, he noted that the abduction paradoxically allowed him to cross paths with individuals he otherwise would have avoided, ultimately resulting in a "beautiful" outcome that yielded many long-term friends.

Decades later, the director continues to lean into high-stakes, transformative journeys. His upcoming theatrical release, Main Vaapas Aaunga, marks his second highly anticipated collaboration with actor Diljit Dosanjh, composer A.R. Rahman, and lyricist Irshad Kamil, promising to deliver another timeless love story that transcends geographical and generational boundaries.
