Director Rajkumar Santoshi's historical drama Batwara 1947 has reached a major milestone, securing clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) without any mandated cuts. Receiving a smooth censor pass with zero edits allows the filmmakers to present their narrative completely intact. Backed by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions, the movie is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical premiere on August 14, 2026, coinciding with Partition Day.

Adapting a Celebrated Partition Play

The film is an official adaptation of acclaimed playwright Asghar Wajahat's play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. Set amidst the turbulent aftermath of the 1947 Partition, the narrative follows a Mohajir family crossing over to Lahore and settling into an abandoned home. The central conflict unfolds when they discover an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave her ancestral residence. Rather than focusing purely on surrounding violence, the plot explores themes of compassion, shared cultural roots, and human resilience during times of crisis.

Star Power and Ensemble Cast

Batwara 1947 features Sunny Deol as the main protagonist, portraying a man driven by moral courage and empathy amid widespread societal turmoil. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi delivers a prominent performance as the elderly woman stranded in Pakistan.

The project also marks the return of Preity Zinta alongside a multi-generational supporting ensemble including Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khhushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur. The film reunites Sunny Deol with director Rajkumar Santoshi, who previously collaborated on hit Hindi cinema classics such as Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak.
